To the ranch of wealthy landowner Octavio Vallejo arrive, as in other years during the coffee bean-gathering season, two women: Gaviota and her mother, Carmenza. The story begins with the death of Octavio Vallejo and his funeral, which all his family attends. Gaviota meets, quite by chance, Sebastian Vallejo, the grandson of Octavio, and falls in love with him. Sebastian has to return to London to finish his studies, but before he leaves, he and Gaviota spend a night together. Sebastian promises Gaviota that he will return in a year to marry her. But soon after he leaves, she discovers she is pregnant so she travels to Europe to find Sebastian, only to fall victim to lies that trap her in a ring of prostitution. She loses the baby. When Sebastian returns from Europe, he tries to find Gaviota but he is told that she has begun a life of prostitution. Disillusioned, he marries another woman, Lucia, whom he does not love. But destiny will drive Sebastian and Gaviota--she under a new identity, Carolina Olivares--to live, between the hellos and goodbyes, an impossible love.
